Pet Disaster Relief Inititative

Emergencies can happen at any time-but here on the Olympic Peninsula, we face unique challenges. Our access to surrounding areas depends heavily on the Hood Canal Bridge and Highway 101. In the event of an earthquake, wildfire, or severe storm, those routes may be limited or unavailable.

For pet owners, this raises an urgent question:

Where will our pets go in a disaster?

Most emergency shelters do not accommodate animals. As a result, many people delay evacuation or put themselves at risk because they refuse to leave their beloved pets
behind.

Our Community Solution

The Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club, a Washington 501(c)(4) non-profit, is partnering with Clallam County Sheriff's Emergency Management Division to bring an AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailer to our area—a critical resource for safely sheltering displaced pets and service animals during emergencies.

To make this happen, we are working to raise $12,000 to fund our portion of the project.

Once those funds are secured, Clallam County Emergency Management will apply for additional grant funding to complete the purchase. These trailers are equipped with essential, non-perishable supplies needed to quickly
establish temporary emergency sheltering for animals, including:

  • Crates and containment equipment

  • Bowls and basic care supplies

  • Cleaning and sanitation materials

The trailer supports:

  • Co-location shelters, where people and their pets can remain together.

  • Temporary sheltering and reunification efforts for displaced animals.

The trailer will be housed, maintained, and deployed by Clallam County Emergency
Management as part of its emergency response capabilities.

Why This Matters

Without proper planning and resources:

Emergency responders face additional challenges managing displaced animals. While separate procedures are in place for livestock, this trailer helps ensure that displaced pets and service animals (primarily dogs) are included in disaster response—protecting both
animals and the people who care for them.

Once the HRKC raises the $12,000 to fund our portion of this project,

Clallam County Sheriff's Emergency Management will apply for the additional grant funding

needed to complete the purchase.

Fully-equipped trailers typically cost upwards of $22,000.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club to promote responsible dog ownership and disaster preparedness.

We encourage all dog owners to:

  • Ensure their dogs are microchipped and properly identified

  • Maintain up-to-date emergency contact information

  • Include provisions for their dogs in emergency and long-term planning
